Humanitarian (Refugee)

Refugee and humanitarian visas provide offshore and onshore applicants an opportunity to obtain protection or resettlement in Australia. Refugees and individuals who suffer from persecution in their home countries may be eligible for refugee or humanitarian visas and thereby obtaining a right to reside in Australia indefinitely.

Visa Number Visa Name Description
Subclass 200 Refugee This visa allows individuals suffering from persecution in their home country and their dependent family to live in Australia permanently.
A majority of eligible persons for this visa are identified and referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the Australian Government.
Subclass 201 In-Country Special Humanitarian Visa This is visa permits non-refugees who suffer from substantial discrimination and human rights abuses in their home and their dependent family members country to enter and live in Australia permanently.
Applicants must be proposed by either a/an:
  • Australian citizen;
  • Australian permanent resident;
  • eligible New Zealand citizen; or
  • organisation operating in Australia
Subclass 202 Global Special Humanitarian Visa Applicants for this visa must be individuals who are subject to substantial discrimination and human rights abuses in their home country and are currently residing outside their home country.
Applicants must be proposed by a Proposer over 18 years of age and is either a/an:
  • Australian citizen;
  • Australian permanent resident;
  • eligible New Zealand citizen; or
  • organisation operating in Australia
This visa allows eligible applicants and their dependent family members to live in Australia permanently.
Subclass 204 Woman at Risk This visa gives protection to refugee women applicants who are subject to persecution, and in danger of victimisation, harassment or other serious abuse base on their gender. The Applicant must be living outside their home country with no protection from a male relative.
This visa allows eligible applicants and their dependents to live in Australia permanently.
